The government is filling nearly 27 senior-level positions that remained vacant in the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI), Union Culture Minister Chandresh Kumari Katoch said on Tuesday.

In a written response to the Lok Sabha, Ms. Katoch explained that the existing post of Director General, one post each of Additional Director General (Archaeology) and Additional Directors General (Administration), one post each of Director (Epigraphy) — Sanskrit and Dravidian Inscriptions and Arabic and Persian Inscription and 18 newly created posts of Joint Directors General and four posts of Additional Director General were lying vacant.

The Minister also said the newly created posts of Additional Directors General and Joint Directors General would be filled after the finalisation of recruitment rules, now under way.

“The posts of Directors (Epigraphy) could not be filled due to lack of qualified service of concerned officials in the respective grade,” said Ms. Katoch.

The government has granted Rs.180.04 crore to the ASI for maintaining 3,678 protected monuments and heritage sites for the current fiscal, the Minister said.
