Security was strengthened around the U.S. Embassy and nearby areas in the city’s diplomatic enclave today following the killing of al-Qaeda chief Osama bin Laden by American forces in Pakistan.

“Additional police personnel have been deployed and patrolling has been intensified around the U.S. Embassy after the incident,” a senior police official said.

Security has also been stepped up in nearby areas in the diplomatic enclave of Chanakya Puri in south Delhi, he said.

Almost 10 years after the 9/11 terror strike, al-Qaeda mastermind and the world’s most dreaded terrorist bin Laden was killed by U.S. forces this morning after being hounded in a special operation in Abbottabad in Pakistan.

The United States has issued a worldwide travel alert for its citizens, especially those living in Pakistan, soon after President Barack Obama announced that bin Laden has been killed.
