With NITI Aayog Vice-Chairman Arvind Panagariya set to return to academic pursuits, the government is learnt to have zeroed in on a few economists to take on the role, including Shankar Acharya, Rajiv Kumar and N.K. Singh.

Mr. Acharya has previously served as the Chief Economic Adviser to the government from 1993 to 2001 and was a member of the Twelfth Finance Commission. He is currently on the board of governors and an honorary professor at the Indian Council for Research on International Economic Relations.

Mr. Kumar, who holds a D.Phil. in economics from Oxford, has served as director & chief executive of ICRIER and has earlier worked with the Asian Development Bank. Mr. Singh recently chaired the Fiscal Responsibility and Budget Management committee.
