October 16, 2012 11:34 pm | Updated October 18, 2016 01:06 pm IST - KOLKATA:

A 15-year-old girl was allegedly raped by two persons as she was returning from school in the Kotwali police thana area of the State’s Cooch Behar district on Monday evening.

The victim was accosted by the two, who took her to a secluded spot and then raped her. She was found in an unconscious state and rushed to hospital. She reported the incident to her family and a complaint was filed later in the evening, a senior police official told The Hindu over telephone from Cooch Behar on Tuesday.

A medical examination was conducted on the victim during the day. She is still recovering in hospital, he added.

The incident, which occurred on the day that Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee lashed out at the media for “glorifying” rape and portraying the State as one where the crime is frequent, was condemned by chairperson of the West Bengal Commission for Women Sunanda Mukherjee.

“It is horrifying to think of such a young girl being raped and the trauma that she will have to bear all her life,” Ms. Mukherjee said.
