A 16-year-old girl was raped allegedly by her neighbour and then set on fire by his relatives on Saturday in a village in the trans-Yamuna area of Shankagarh of this district. She was admitted to hospital here with serious burns.
The class 10 student’s parents, both vendors, alleged that she was alone at home when the youth forcefully entered it on Saturday afternoon and raped her, police said. Later, the girl’s parents confronted the man’s family. This led to a clash during which the girl was allegedly chased and set on fire.
The matter came into light on Sunday after a women's organisation informed the media. The girl’s family members alleged that they approached the police after she was raped but they refused to register a complaint.
Station officer Pradeep Singh said the police came to know of the incident only on Sunday through the media. No charges were filed yet and her medical report was not released.
