The Supreme Court will hear on Thursday a writ petition filed by nine residents of Muzaffarnagar in Uttar Pradesh seeking a CBI probe into the communal violence and provision of proper relief and rehabilitation to over 20,000 people whose houses were burnt in the violence.
A three-judge Bench consisting of Chief Justice P. Sathasivam and Justices Ranjana Desai and Ranjan Gogoi will hear the petition filed by Mohd. Haroon and eight other persons seeking relief, including a direction to the Centre, to provide adequate Army and paramilitary forces under its control.
On Wednesday, senior counsel Gopal Subramanium made a mention before a Bench of Justices G.S. Sinvghi and V. Gopala Gowda for urgent hearing of the petition. Counsel said, “It is a cry of anguish. Human lives cannot be lost on account of negligence of governance. It is a human tragedy and the injured have no facility to go to hospital. It should not happen in any country. Caste or creed is irrelevant in our Constitution.”
Justice Singhvi shared counsel’s concern and said the matter would be listed on Thursday.
