A suspected militant has shot dead a sarpanch in Pulwama district of south Kashmir on Monday night.
Informed sources said a masked man shot dead 53-year-old Ghulam Ahmad Lone outside his residence at Kulipora. Deputy Inspector-General of Police, South Kashmir, Vijay Kumar told The Hindu that the assassin was unidentified but the sarpanch’s family suspected him to be a militant. The sarpanch was operating a water pump when the masked man asked him if he was Lone. “As he replied in affirmative, the stranger pulled out his pistol and shot him dead,” the DIG said, quoting the sarpanch’s son.
A critically wounded Lone was rushed to the Sub-District Hospital of Bijbehara but he died before reaching there.
