He expects support from some Congressmen too
Claiming that his prospects in the July 19 presidential election are “very good,” the former Speaker, P.A. Sangma, said on Sunday that he was optimistic of a repeat of 1969 situation when V.V. Giri had defeated the official candidate of the Congress.
“Since there is no restriction, whip or any written direction in this election, I am hopeful of getting support of many MLAs and MPs. Therefore, my prospects in the elections are very good,” he told reporters here after meeting MLAs and MPs of the ruling Biju Janata Dal and the Opposition BJP.
Mr. Sangma claimed that 18 parties were already backing his candidature and he was expecting support from some Congress men too.
“Eighteen political parties have given commitment to support me. Some parties are likely to announce their decision in a day or two while others may not announce at all. We hope they will vote for us,” he said.
On whether he expected the support of Congress MPs and MLAs, he said, “Naturally, I hope so.”
“What you see is only black and white. Things are different because there can be no restriction on voters. I am hopeful that MLAs and MPs will vote for me according to their conscience and not on the party line,” he said, explaining how he was hoping to win despite having support of only 38 per cent in the electoral college.
Congress has money and muscle power hence chances are rare for Mr.Sangma but miracles happens as did in 1969 as far as conscience these politicians don't have any more only money makes the mare go.
Mr. Sangma has a clean political career and a very obvious candidates for presidential election.Congress is the party which is responsible for the origin of cast -ism and regionalism politics and be-fooling the peoples of India since independent .On the name of democracy they made our political system crippled.
It is not understood how he is claiming his prospect is anyway bright in the prez election for Sangma. There cannot be any bar in becoming optimistic of a win, but if we believe in arithmetic and simple numbers, he has no hope at all. He is talking about conscience vote. I doubt if he himself has a clear conscience. Except politics, where mudslinging and muckraking.
Mr Sangma is simply spreading hatred and playing caste card else why should he talk he is a tribal candidate in stead of his qualitative preferences? He has tried all the tricks to block Pranab's candidature.
So you want to be another VV Giri! Let the BJP leaders listen it
properly!
It is alright to live on hopes . Why is he only harping on his being a tribal? He was a good Lok Sabha Speaker and he was elected to that post because he was part of the Congress and not as a tribal. Why do we try to divide the country in this manner. As a President, one represents the people and not just a c section - tribals!
It is quite intriguing to note that Sangma often repeats only one
aspect of "1969 Presidential Polls,namely,"Conscience Vote"!He very
cleverly avoids talking about the vital developments that led to
the evolution of that slogan!Then,Congress MPs were 706 out of
776!The party was under the "control of old persons",in 60's,70's
&80'sWhile PM Indra was in 50's!The oldies nominated N. Sanjiv
Reddy!Indra made Vice President, VV Giri to resign and acontedt the
Presidential poll as "Independent "candidate" To ensure his
success, she called for "Conscience of her partymen only"! Sangma
has failed to note that was an "unique occasion" and it could not
be compared with the present situation!"Conscience Vote has no
meaning in the present context!
Mr. Sangama is the right person to be elected as next President. He
continuously won 9 LS elections and was an undisputed LS Speaker. He is
a wonderful man compared to a failed Finance Minister with feudal
mentality of Congress.
If all wishful dreams become reality, this world would be a different place. Anyway, Mr.Sangma can keep on wishing to be President of India till the last vote is counted and the result declared.
It is diffcult to believe that a presidential candidate can be so naive? Giri won in entire different conditions, where congress candidate was selected ignoring the wishes of then PM Ms Gandhi? Is he expecting MMS to revolt and support him against Pranab?
