Students awaiting their Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) class XII results spent an anxious morning after rumours spread that the results would be declared on Wednesday. Sources in the CBSE later said they would notify students 24 hours ahead of the declaration.
Students and parents spent most of the morning browsing for information about the results. “My daughter did not sleep all night as she was nervous about her result. In the morning, nervousness turned to panic as none of the websites had any information,” said Aneesha Bhargava.
“If the results were not going to be announced, though several news stories online were saying it would be, CBSE should have provided some information to quell the rumours,” said Gargi Ranawat, who has received a conditional offer from a foreign university. “It was a very stressful day. My entire future depends on these marks.”
Rumours about the results being declared on Wednesday started a day after the Delhi High Court asked the CBSE not to scrap its “moderation policy.” Union Human Resource Development Minister Prakash Javadekar had come out in support of the policy and said moderation was okay, but under no circumstances should there be “spiking” of marks. Sources in the HRD Ministry said that it would seek legal opinion on the Delhi high court order asking the board to continue with a marking policy that it recently decided to do away with.
The marks moderation policy was devised to make up for difficult question papers or confusing, inarticulate questions, which put students at a disadvantage. Under the policy, students who appear in board exams can be awarded up to 15 per cent extra marks. The CBSE had decided to do away with the policy this year as it was causing an inflation in marks that was in turn leading to colleges asking for near perfect cut-off scores during the admission process.
Sources in the CBSE, without giving a date, said there will not be a delay and results would be declared by the end of the week.
This year, a total of 1098891 candidates from 10678 schools had registered for the CBSE class XI board exams — 460026 girls and 638865 boys. The CBSE board exam for the class 12 students was conducted at 3502 exam centres across the country. Last year, the class XII results were declared on May 28.
