RS condoles death of sitting member, adjourned

The Rajya Sabha was adjourned for the day on Monday after paying tribute to sitting Janata Dal (Secular) member and former Union Minister Rajasekara Murthy, who passed away on Sunday.

Expressing “profound sorrow”, Chairman Hamid Ansari said that in his death, the country had lost a veteran freedom fighter, an able administrator and a distinguished parliamentarian.

Eighty eight year-old Rajasekara Murthy had represented Karnataka in the Rajya Sabha from April 1994 to August 1999, April 2002 to November 2005 and from April 2006 till his death. He was also a member of the Lok Sabha from 1980 to 1984 and had served as a Union minister from September 1995 to June 1996.

A political and social worker, Rajasekara Murthy had participated in the freedom struggle. He was a member of the Karnataka Assembly from 1952 to 1978 and held several portfolios in the State between 1968 and 1993.
