Janata Dal (United) leader and Lok Sabha member Sharad Yadav has said the UPA government will either have to roll back the decision on Foreign Direct Investment in multi-brand retail or face an adjournment motion in Parliament.
The JD(U) leader said here on Sunday that the Opposition was united in taking on the government on the issue.
“The majority of the Lok Sabha is against the decision [allowing 51 per cent FDI in multi-brand retail]. This decision will snatch livelihoods of millions of Indians and whatever benefits it will bring will be for the rich and a select few,” he said.
“And yet, the government is hell bent on getting it passed. They knew that Parliament was in session. Then why did they take this crucial decision on their own without consultation with the Opposition and all the stakeholders concerned?” he wondered.
Mr. Yadav told The Hindu that he would talk to all the parties on Monday to decide on the Opposition strategy to counter the government's decision.
