Rice sent via Bangladesh to reach Tripura

March 30, 2015 04:33 am | Updated 04:50 am IST - Agartala

Delivery of the second transhipped consignment of rice to Tripura through Bangladesh will start from Tuesday. A Food Corporation of India (FCI) official said on Sunday that they would ferry 10,000 tonnes of rice from the Ashuganj river port in Bangladesh.

Last year, FCI ferried 10,000 tonnes of rice from Andhra Pradesh under a similar arrangement with Bangladesh.

Bangladesh has temporarily declared Ashuganj, 54 km from Agartala, as ‘port of call’ to facilitate India to transport rice to Tripura.

The official said they had entered into an arrangement with a goods transport agency in Bangladesh to carry the rice sacks directly to its warehouses at Nandan Nagar of Agartala.
