The Centre's submission to the Supreme Court that it had decided to withdraw the case against Italian businessman Ottavio Quattrocchi involving the alleged Bofors payoffs deal reflected the final cover-up act by the Government of India, CPI (M) general secretary Prakash Karat said on Thursday.
Mr. Karat, who was in Chennai to attend the CPI(M) State committee meeting, told reporters that the UPA Government had so far been doing everything to scuttle the case. "Now, the formal cover-up is taking place," he said.
Mr. Karat later attended the CPI(M) meet which was described as a routine one to discuss organisational matters.
The CPI(M) leader was on his way to Thiruvanathapuram to participate in the ‘Human Chain’ programme being organised by the Kerala unit of the CPI(M) on Gandhi Jayanti Day as a mark of protest against the UPA government’s decision to sign a Free Trade Agreement (FTA) with the Association of South East Asian Nations (ASEAN).
