Release ULFA leaders; government urged

The United Liberation Front of Asom(Pro-Talk) on Friday said that jailed leaders of the ULFA should be released by the government to facilitate their free movement and the peace process. The ULFA (Pro-Talk) also urged both the ULFA and Centre to sit for unconditional talks and offered to join the process at a later stage if the ULFA leaders feel that they (the Pro-Talk leaders) should also join the peace process.

ULFA (Pro-Talk) leaders Mrinal Hazarika and Prabal Neog announced here a day after Mr. Hazarika met jailed ULFA chairman Arabinda Rajkhowa at Guwahati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) on Thursday when Rajkhowa was taken there for dental treatment .

One of the members of the Central Executive Committee of the ULFA, Ramu Mech, who is currently on parole, met Rajkhowa and other jailed ULFA leaders in Central Jail, Guwahati. After meeting them Mr. Mech told journalists that the ULFA chairman had told him that the outfit was willing to sit for talks if the government showed its goodwill.

Mr. Mech, however, insisted that peace talks must begin with the very issue of “sovereignty”. He also said that ULFA commander-in-chief Paresh Barua had never opposed holding peace talks and
