The Assam Police have sounded a red alert across the state fearing backlash following the apprehension of ULFA ‘chairman’ Arabinda Rajkhowa and ‘deputy commander-in-chief’ Raju Baruah.

All police stations were alerted to maintain vigil and step up security measures in view of the situation, official sources said.

The Centre has also directed the state government to beef up security measures in the state, the sources said.

Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi said, “Nobody can rule out backlash. I have alerted my officers and the government of Assam has to be prepared for it at all times.”

ULFA had struck in a big way with twin blasts in Nalbari killing nine people and injuring 53 others after the arrest of its ‘finance secretary’ Chitrabon Hazarika and ‘foreign secretary’ Sasha Choudhury on November five.

Rajkhowa and Barua were apprehended by the BSF at Dawki in Meghalaya the early hours today and brought here along with seven other ULFA members, including Rajkhowa’s wife, amid tight security.
