Remains No. 1 in South, up 14.2 per cent in Delhi
The Hindu has recorded the highest growth among all English dailies in the country, adding an impressive 50,000 readers nationally over the previous quarter, according to the latest findings of the Indian Readership Survey, IRS 2012 Q3.
The Hindu's current national Average Issue Readership (AIR) is 22.58 lakh: this marks an increase of 4.1 per cent over the corresponding period in 2011, IRS 2011 Q3. With this, it has achieved a 2.3 per cent increase over the previous quarter, IRS 2012 Q2.
The Hindu continues to dominate the South Indian market, where its current AIR figure is 18.99 lakh. Again, The Hindu has shown a growth of 3.8 per cent over the same quarter last year, and a 2.9 per cent increase over the previous quarter.
Significantly, the growth trends prevail across all the southern States, compared to the corresponding period last year. While The Hindu maintains a strong hold over readership in Tamil Nadu, its figures have increased by 11.7 per cent in Kerala, 8.1 per cent in Andhra Pradesh and 5.1 per cent in Karnataka. It has shown an increase in the major cities of these States. The readership figures for Delhi have also grown, by 14.2 per cent over the last year.
The Hindu, with its 134-year record of ethical editorial excellence and commitment to quality journalism, has reinforced its supremacy as South India’s favourite English daily, and made impressive strides in the National Capital Region too, a spokesperson for the newspaper said.
The IRS is conducted by the Media Research Users Council (MRUC), a registered, not-for-profit body. Its members are drawn from among major advertisers, advertising agencies, publishers, and broadcast/other media. Based on an internationally accepted annual sample spread, the IRS is the world’s largest continuous readership research study. Its annual sample size exceeds 2.6 lakh.

But why don't you expand your wings in other parts on INDIA ? In Gujarat for example, "The Hindu" is not available from local new paper suppliers Even if you go to some specific places, only the previous day's news paper is available We generally browse through your website, but it will be better if a printed version is available so everyone in the family can read
I can see The Hindu as the best authentic news paper with no non-sense
news. I have been an avid reader of Hindu and will be in the future
also. All the very best to the very best news paper.
Congratulations to the nation's greatest newspaper The Hindu for achieving this enviable
position. Though little slow with changes with the fast developing world, it's consistency in
maintaining accuracy and decency in reporting news is admirable! Best wishes to the
dedicated staff and management of the paper to continue its success in future.
Congratulations to "The Hindu" group.Infact, evry bit of progress of the Hindu is,no doubt, the progress of the people of the country, since it,The Hindu, depicts in reporting,in upholding the democratic principles and standing by the poorest of the poor in need the true indian soul and heart.
All the best Hindu go ahead.
It seems The Hindu has learnt the trick.
"Ethical Editorial Excellence" ....these are quite heavy words pls. use them carefully.
I want your paper in MUMBAI.
The Hindu Deserves the top slot.No other daily can match the excellency
and transparency with with The Hindu Presents news.
Congrats.
But this'nt enough. You need to attract more young readers. The news coverage also needs to be widened.
At times, for the principle of authenticity, speed seems to have been compromised.
You may even have a column for news from readers, with some incentives , so that all happenings around the globe reach you immediately, without waiting for your correspondents.
I wish you all success
Congratulatons to THE HINDU. However, please heed this earnest request. Please publish the paper from mumbai as well since the readers in mumbai find it extremly diffucult to get the paper in mumbai. Once the paper starts publishing in mumbai then only its reader ship will increase in mumbai.
"The Hindu" you deserve it..not for merely these statistics but for the standards & ethics you have maintained for a record 134 years..
Congratulations & Keep it up !!
grt !!!!!...keep the flag flying. I have been reading The HIndu for the last 20 yrs. unfortunatly, for the last 6 yrs only on web.
A day delayed circulation in north and west is one of the main reason
for less penetration in these areas. Please improve.
Congratulations The Hindu........I am a regular reader. You are the best of India.
Growth driven by Values & Moral.
Congrats to team of The Hindu for maintaining superior quality in content and not compromising ideology of press for politicians and money. I am reading The Hindu from last 5 years and want to continue reading it as long as I can.. thx once again
Congratulations to The Hindu. May it continue to grow, and may it maintain its standard.
Congratulations THE HINDU. There is still scope to further growth,
particularly in North Karnataka, provided it gives more prominence, at
least in its area edition, to events, latest developments, human-
interest stories, legal matters, citizens' concerns, woes of neglected
sections, other sides of news, etc., covering whole of North
Karnataka. To maintain its standard tradition, it should stop
coverage to cunning politicians, publicity mongers and award chasers.
THE HINDU, by its glorious reputation, makes impact on rulers and
administration. This influence of THE HINDU is being misused by
certain ambitious people by presenting misleading information and
wrong facts against which THE HINDU should act as OMBUDSMAN.
Congratulations to the Hindu! As a Bangladeshi living in the US, I will say that I find your standards of journalism remarkably high in an era where sensationalism has displaced fairness and impartiality across the World media.
The Hindu, you are doing a wonderful job! Keep it up!
truth's victory.adream
Congratulations! I am now in Gurgaon and I read or browse daily print
editions of HT, TOI, IE and the Hindu. The quality of the news and
views presented by The Hindu is unmatched. Op-Ed articles in The Hindu
present a kaleidoscopic variety unseen in the other newspapers. Most
of the others tire the readers by having to go through day after day
the same set of writers from policy institutes or veteran journalists
long past their prime. The sobriety of The Hindu is noteworthy. I also
notice that the Hindu is giving less attention to flashing
celebrities. Overall, after, the Editorial Board has passed on fully
to professional editors the stock of the newpaper has gone up in my
esteem.Please keep it up.
The Hindu has been a good paper for long indeed; but unfortunate it is highly biassed against the majority Hindu community in its
coverage
Dear Editor and team members,
I'm a reader of The Hindu over five decades, some time subscribed and purchased on other days.My father who introduced Hindu to me took a promise that always read it every morning and learn English from the content. Though I do read many other English Dailies from different parts of the world, my first choice is always Hindu only.Hindu is the only news paper that maintains quality news and pictures that are acceptable to any family members.Best wishes for continued progress.
Congratulations !
Congratulations,keep it up.
Kudos to The Hindu for the giant strides that it has been taking on the readership front. In an era where paid news, sensationalism and even fabrication of news have become commonplace in the print media The Hindu stands out like a beacon light with its commitment to ethics and principles in dissemination of information to its readers. The Hindu will always remain the thinking man's guide to news and views.
CONGRATS HINDU, It shows that if you stick to ethics, people will
recognise it one or the other days, and as india is getting smarter
(slowly), the readership of hindu will grow even higher (and the other
hollow, noisy, dumb papers are gonna go down). I even say we can have a
hindu index, where one can track readership density of a particular
place and the everage IQ of the area, I'm pretty sure they are linked.
Keep up the good work
Congratulations!! to the Editor and entire staff of The Hindu.
Quality can never go out of style, and the results show. Keep up the great work - it is a tradition; correction: it is a duty with The Hindu. Congratulations again.
RMR, 30 Jan 2013
Heartiest congratulations to the Hindu team! I also consider this a
victory of serious journalism over sensational reporting. Please keep up
the good work.
Kudos to The Hindu. You deserve it and I couldn't be more happier!
Congratulations, The Hindu !Even in this fiercely competitive Journalism
world, It has achieved success through its mature contents rather than
relying on petty means such as vulgarity (as some papers, unfortunately
do) .
As a young reader form North India, I would recommend to pay some
attention on weekly "opportunity" section which lacks information on
available employment opportunities in this area.
Congratulations! Good quality journalism is always a long term bet. Wish you can set up operations in western India too. As word of mouth goes, I have asked my dad to switch to The Hindu.
CONGRATULATION.
An excellent English daily.
Congrats 'The Hindu'. Miles to go!
Congratulations!!! I wish it will soon become 1st over entire India. I
read most of the North Indian English news papers also... Frankly
speaking, their readership depends mostly on obscene pictures and spicy
news. I am happy that The Hindu is not using such worst tricks. Rather
I consider increase in readership of The Hindu is directly proportional
to intellectual and serious thinking of citizens in that part of the
country.
I am a NRI who reads "THE HINDU" on the net for sometime. I find their reporting balanced and factual. Their comment columns don't have trash or vulgarity, as one finds in some of the so called better known ones more interested in circulation figures, than content !
Way to go. It is an indication of the impartial reporting that has been the hall mark of this newspaper and the population's love for it will only increase, as long as it remains a watchdog for injustice and handedness of the state's administration and a fighter of just causes. All the best. Ravi
Hindu is perhaps the best newspaper in the world! My best wishes!
Congratulations! I have been a reader of The Hindu for more than fifty-five years and I do not think there is any paper in India or the US (where I am on a visit at present) that is comparable to The Hindu. Look, how the editor of New York Times back tracked and distanced himself when Lieberman threatened to take action against it for publishing WikiLeaks cables. I do not think, The Hindu will ever be cowed down by such threats.
Well, if The Hindu continues the same policy that it has been following since N.Ram and N.Ravi took over, I am sure the readersbip will go up further and further and there will be no paper in India or the world to beat it. However, I would say, the Kerala unit and the reporters seem to have a little hang over of the pre-Ram/Ravi days.
Congratulations to The Hindu from Canada
Congratulations! It is especially nice because the increase is without
having titillating pictures, stories or without becoming mouthpiece of
any politician, party, government or vested interest. It means that the
readership values journalistic ethics and independence. So they deserve
appreciation and praise.
The Hindu and Dawn are the only two newspapers in the subcontinent worth reading.
Keep up your quality and resist the temptation to become a tabloid to increase readership.
In a world of newspapers which seem to have morphed into nothing but advertisements, its refreshing to read something like Hindu, and its even more gratifying to see the number of readers increasing. Good luck ahead!
congrats The hindu
It is a pity that the Hindu is content with its supremacy in South
India as this report puts it.
The Hindu should realize that it is time for someone from the family
to step out of Chennai, live in India and not merely Chennai and grow
the paper in all corners of the country.
Even if there are issues about turf, surely the entire N E India is not
about turf ? Are people not hungry for news and analysis in NE India ?
With NE India open terrain the issue of turf remains. The Hindu has
been challenged on its turf and come a winner. It is time for the
family to treat India as its turf.
Finally, to go beyond this - why cant The Hindu be published in
regional languages all over the country ? The technology is there , a
family that is committed to this is awaited.
Cheers !
The Hindu is leaping because of the quality. Quality of news, quality of
paper print and website designed for better reading. Thank you for your
service.
