Protest erupted in Gauhati University on Monday over the alleged murder of a post-graduate student, whose body was recovered from the quarters of a teacher on Sunday night.

The police have arrested Birlang Narzary, a Reader in the Modern Indian Language Department, from whose quarters the body of Jharna Wari was recovered.

The police said the teacher admitted that he had tried to commit suicide by consuming pesticide after murdering the woman.

The police rushed him to hospital while another team of police found the body of the woman lying in a pool of blood.

The victim’s family said that Jharna was recently married to a doctor.

Students marched to the office of Vice-Chancellor O.K. Medhi, demanding life imprisonment for the teacher and an improvement in security for students.

Dr. Medhi told the representatives of the Postgraduate Students’ Union and other students that the teacher was suspended, and a First Information Report filed. He said police patrolling on the campus would be intensified.

The accused teacher, aged 32, was undergoing treatment and the police were yet to interrogate him.

The Gauhati University Teachers’ Association has demanded a high-level probe into the incident.
