"Rapes prevalent in India, not in Bharat"

While the entire country is agitated over the Delhi gang rape, RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat has said rapes are mainly prevalent in urban India due to western influence and that such crimes do not happen in Bharat — rural areas.

The remark was slammed by the Congress, the CPI(M) and women’s bodies.

“Crimes against women happening in urban India are shameful. But such crimes won’t happen in Bharat or the rural areas. You go to villages and forests and there will be no such incidents,” he said at Silchar recently
