Bickering in the Tripura Congress casts its shadow over the party’s disobedience movement to protest the ‘all-round failure” of the CPI(M) government. A number of senior leaders did not turn up for an event on Thursday. It was a gathering of hardly 5,000 party supporters.
Office-bearers close to Leader of the Opposition in the Assembly Sudip Roy Burman tried in vain to make the event successful. The Trinamool Congress, which is wooing the rank and file of the Congress into its fold, held a ‘full house’ convention attended by national general secretary Mukul Roy on Wednesday. At the Congress rally, prominent leaders including Ratan Lal were absent and the former PCC chief Birajit Sinha joined it midway. Congress supporters gathered at Swami Vivekananda stadium, from where PCC president Diba Chandra Hrangkhawl and working president Ashis Kumar Saha led them in a procession. Mr. Sudip Roy Burman, who is being blamed for the exodus from the Congress, followed the rally. The police stopped the rally at Abala Chowmuhani . Leaders including Mr. Saha had a scuffle with police before a magistrate declared the assembly unlawful, and participants were arrested for violating prohibitory orders.
