Rajya Sabha passes SBI Bill amidst din

August 31, 2011 01:22 am | Updated 01:22 am IST - NEW DELHI:

The Rajya Sabha on Tuesday passed a bill which seeks to transfer powers to the Central government from the Reserve Bank with regard to the State Bank of India subsidiary, State Bank of Hyderabad, with an amendment moved by a BJP member.

The transfer of powers to the Centre was necessitated after the ownership of the SBI was transferred from the RBI to the government.

The State Bank of India (Subsidiary Bank Laws) Amendment Bill, 201, already agreed upon by the Lok Sabha, was passed by voice vote amidst din over the appointment of Lokayukta by the Governor in Gujarat.

Even as BJP members were protesting, Minister of State for Finance Namo Narain Meena moved the Bill for consideration of the House.

The government agreed to an amendment by Piyush Goyal (BJP), who detected a technical flaw in the Bill.

The House approved the Bill before P.J. Kurien, who was in the chair, adjourned the House for the day.
