Rajya Sabha members’ work to be appraised

August 25, 2016 01:48 am | Updated 01:48 am IST - NEW DELHI:

Performance parameters of Lok Sabha members are usually set over what they deliver to their constituents apart from their performance within Parliament in debates.

In the case of Rajya Sabha members it is limited (mostly) to their interventions in debates in Parliament and the number of questions asked. Prime Minister Narendra Modi will be calling a meeting of the BJP’s Rajya Sabha members on August 31, to end some of the asymmetry of this appraisal.

“Prime Minister feels that the Rajya Sabha members too should have some clear deliverables on which they can be assessed,” said a senior Minister.

BJP president Amit Shah, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Ananth Kumar, and his deputies in the Ministry, Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi and S.S. Ahluwalia, will attend the meeting, as will BJP general secretary Kailash Vijaywargiya, who is part of the parliamentary coordination committee of the party. The government is not in an advantageous position in the RS and it will also be an attempt, sources say, to ensure that the treasury is able to combat an aggressive opposition in the Upper House.
