Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh is scheduled to meet Jammu and Kashmir Governor N.N. Vohra on Tuesday to discuss the security situation in the State.

Mr. Vohra has been in Delhi for the past three days and would be meeting Mr. Singh at the latter’s residence on Tuesday morning.

On Monday, the Home Ministry informed the Election Commission that it could provide only 30,000 Central forces for the May 25 byelection in Anantnag Lok Sabha constituency.

EC demands

The EC had placed a demand for 74,000 Central forces. However, the Home Ministry is learnt to have informed that they do not have such a huge force at their disposal.

The Ministry had earlier said that the April 9 bypolls in Srinagar constituency had vitiated the atmosphere, which was marred by violence as troopers could not reach the polling booths.

An Election Commission official said on Monday that the polls will go as per the schedule.

The Home Ministry expected the polls to be deferred in the wake of non-availability of forces.
