Railway Minister P.K. Bansal’s nephew, V Singla, was arrested on Friday by the CBI, which also asrrested a Member of the Railway Board in an alleged case bribery for fixing a top level position in the government, .
Senior officials said Mr. Bansal’s nephew V. Singla was arrested in Chandigarh for accepting Rs. 90 lakh in cash from Manjunath, the conduit for Mr Mahesh Kumar, recently promoted as Member (Staff) in the Raliway Borad. Mr Kumar was allegedly trying to get a lucrative position as Member (Electrical). Manjunath was arrested in Bangalore.
Mr. Kumar was arrested in Mumbai by a CBI team soon after he had flown in from Delhi. The CBI has registered a case under the Prevention of Corruption Act and the IPC against him. The other person arrested by the CBI was Sandip Goyal, who allegedly assisted in brokering the deal.
Two courier boys who had allegedly delivered a bribe money of Rs.90 lakh to the nephew of Railway Minister P.K. Bansal on behalf of a Member of Railway Board were also arrested in Chandigarh by the CBI.
PTI adds: "All accused arrested in Chandigarh, Mumbai and Bangalore would be brought to Delhi and produced before a Patiala House court in the afternoon," said a CBI spokesperson.
Mr. Bansal could not be contacted for reaction.
Homed in on Kumar
The CBI conducted searches in Delhi, Chandigarh and other cities, the officials said. In an operation kept under wraps, the CBI kept a tab on Mr. Kumar’s movements and phone calls and swooped down on Mr. Singla at the time of the bribe payment.
Both Mr. Singla and Mr. Manjunath were taken to the CBI office in the city where they were placed under arrest. Mr. Kumar was General Manager (Western railways) and promoted recently as Member, Railway Board, a post equivalent to Secretary in the Government of India.
