Security clearance came in handy for All-India Congress Committee vice-president Rahul Gandhi to avoid interacting with the media in Visakhapatnam on Monday.

Mr. Gandhi, while wrapping up his two-day tour of the Hudhud-affected areas, on Monday visited the Rajiv Smruthi Bhavan on Beach Road which was badly damaged by the cyclone. He was escorted in and out of the building, brushing past the waiting media, in a bid to avoid embarrassing questions on the performance of the Congress in the elections in Haryana and Maharashtra.

The Congress vice-president, along with AICC general secretary Digvijay Singh, entered the memorial building, heard the details of damage from Sehdev Singh who runs the building, took the appeal for funds for its repairs from him and then made a quick exit.

The local Congress leaders tried to explain that the security cordon did not allow their leader to address the media. They could not explain how the media that was allowed to come within handshaking distance from him would pose a risk while talking.

Rahul Gandhi later returned to New Delhi by a special flight.
