The condition of the tusker which has an abscess on its leg at Kondanur near Anaikatti improved on Sunday following the treatment given by the veterinary team of the Forest Department on Saturday. Officials said the elephant, aged between 20-25, seemed active on Sunday and moved to the forest boundary. Continuing the treatment given to the elephant, the veterinary team gave the animal fruits stuffed with medicines. Forest staff persisted with the diet of fodder, sugar cane, banana, and jaggery.

Irish rock singer Bob Geldof says he is returning his 'Freedom of the City of Dublin' honour because it is also held by Myanmar leader Aung San Suu Kyi, accusing her of complicity for what he and others, including the United Nations, call “ethnic cleansing” of Rohingya Muslims in the Asian nation. The founder of Live Aid says Ms. Suu Kyi is a “handmaiden to genocide” whose association with Ireland’s capital “shames us all.”

The nearly a week-long spell of toxic smog enveloping the national capital continued today, with reduced visibility in some areas leading to cancellation of eight trains in Delhi, according to reports from PTI.

The minimum temperature dropped to 12.4 degrees Celsius, a notch below the season’s average, a MeT department official told the news agency. The humidity was recorded at 93% at 8.30 AM. The visibility dropped to 500 metres at 5.30 AM and later to 400 metres at 8.30 AM.

Rohingya Muslims escaping the violence in their homeland of Myanmar are now so desperate that some are trying to swim to safety in neighboring Bangladesh. In just a week, more than three dozen boys and young men used cooking oil drums like life rafts to swim across the mouth of the Naf River and wash up ashore in Shah Porir Dwip, a fishing town and cattle trade spot.

Southeast Asian nations will not take a relative calm in the dispute over the South China Sea for granted, according to a draft of a statement to be issued during a summit meeting in Manila on Monday. Leaders from China, the United States and seven other nations are joining ASEAN at their annual summit. ASEAN summit meeting began on Monday colourfully.

Quake jolts Iran-Iraq border

Hundreds of people are reported to be killed and hundreds more injured in the 7.3-magnitude earthquake shook the mountainous Iran-Iraq border triggering landslides.

The quake hit 30 kilometres southwest of Halabja in Iraqi Kurdistan at around 9.20 pm.

The quake, which struck at a relatively shallow depth of 25 kilometres, was felt for about 20 seconds in Baghdad, and for longer in other provinces of Iraq.

On the Iranian side of the border, the tremor shook several cities in the west of the country including Tabriz.

Meanwhile, another quake jolted Costa Rica on Monday.

Hundreds of mourners crowded into the tiny town of Sutherland Springs for the first Sunday service since a gunman stormed the First Baptist Church a week earlier, killing more than two dozen people in the worst mass shooting in Texas history.

After an emotional sermon held outdoors under a massive white tent, congregants and the public were invited to return to the church for the first time since the tragedy. A chilling memorial set up inside the church included 26 white chairs including one for the unborn baby of a victim who was pregnant bearing each victim’s name or nickname painted in gold.
