Following revelations in the drug seizure case, the Punjab police have terminated the services of boxer Ram Singh, the sparring partner of Olympic bronze medallist Vijender Singh. Singh, who was posted as head constable, was removed from the boxing camp at NIS Patiala.
The police also terminated the services of sub-inspector Sarabjit Singh, who has been absconding ever since the police recovered drugs and arms from his house a few days back. The case made headlines after NRI Anoop Singh Kahlon, soon after his arrest earlier this month, named Vijender Singh and Ram Singh as his clients. During his questioning Ram Singh accepted that he and Vijender had tried the contraband.
Vijender, however, denied his involvement, even though the car registered in his wife’s name was recovered near Kahlon’s residence, where almost 26 kg of heroin, worth Rs. 130 crore, were seized.
According to an official release, the Fatehgarh Sahib police raided the house of Sarabjit Singh at Naya Gaon, a locality on the outskirts of Chandigarh, on March 27 and seized 2.6 kg of opium and material used for packing drugs. The packing material was similar to that recovered from the house of sacked Punjab police inspector Jagdish Singh Bhola, allegedly the gang’s kingpin, on March 7.
The search of Sarabjit’s house also yielded 10 AK-47 empties and a .12 bore gun, whose licence could not be produced. Eleven mobile handsets and two computers were also recovered. Further investigations led to the recovery of another 10 kg of powder from Kulbir Singh, who has already been arrested in the case. The officials claimed the powder was used as a rave drug. The release claimed that evading arrest since the case was registered, Jagdish Bhola stayed in Sarabjit’s house. He called his associates from a mobile phone registered in the name of Ms. Reet Sidhu, Sarabjit’s wife.
