The Punjab government on Sunday decided to revoke the ban on the screening of movie Aarakshan after it accepted the recommendations of the special committee to permit the film in its revised version, where certain objectionable dialogues and scenes were deleted.
An official release said that the government had suspended the exhibition of the film in the cinemas across the State under Section 6 of the Punjab Cinemas (Regulation Act, 1952) on the basis of the intelligence reports that Aarakshan contained scenes and dialogues which could hurt the sentiments of some communities.
A seven-member committee, which reviewed the film, had, in its report dated August 12, endorsed that some scenes and dialogues could hurt the sentiments of Dalits in Punjab. The ban on screening of the film would continue till the “objectionable” scenes were removed.
The Principal Secretary, Department of Home, wrote to the director and producer of the film, Prakash Jha, pointing out the controversial matter. Prakash Jha Productions replied that all the objectionable scenes and dialogues had been deleted from the movie.
The committee reviewed the film again on Sunday and expressed satisfaction over the amendments.
