PUCL condemns Assam violence

December 26, 2014 02:44 am | Updated November 16, 2021 04:49 pm IST - CHENNAI:

The People’s Union for Civil Liberties (PUCL) has condemned Tuesday’s violence against tribal people in Assam and called for strong action to avoid a repeat of such incidents.

In a statement, it said unarmed tribal people in Sonitpur and Kokrajhar districts of Assam were shot dead by gangs of the National Democratic Front of Boroland (Songbijit).

“PUCL is deeply concerned over the outbreak of murderous attacks once again.

“It is apprehensive that unless the situation is handled firmly, a situation of mass death, destruction and displacement will recur as it did during the ethnic killings in mid-2012 in Kokrajhar and neighbouring districts resulting in nearly 100 being killed and over 400,000 people fleeing their homes,” the statement said.
