Delhi gang-rape victim's brother says that she had asked passers-by for help but to no avail
The brother of the 23-year-old Delhi gang-rape victim on Saturday said delay in providing medical assistance to his sister led to complications which perhaps led to her death.
“She told me that after the incident that she had asked passers-by for help but to no avail and it was only after the highway patrol alerted the police that she was rushed to hospital but it had taken almost two hours”, her brother told PTI in their village in Ballia.
“By then a lot of blood was lost”, he said, adding that “had the passers-by helped and if prompt medical assistance was provided, perhaps her life could have been saved”.
He said people need to change their attitude and be ready to extend help.
Regretting that consensus could not be reached in the meeting between representatives of the central and State governments on capital punishment in rape cases, he said the family is confidendent that on the basis of the charge sheet filed by the Delhi Police in his sister’s case, all the accused would be sentenced to death.

It is very true. people's attitude should change and we should be ready to help. Many are actually concerned that if they help they will be troubled by the police for further follow ups. And usually as our system is slow it will take years to settle and even the people who help may have to go to court many times. So there should be some change in that regard.
people ignore extending help to needy especially ones who are found on the roadways suffering from accidents, chiefly because they intent to avoid being engulfed into the legal actions and repective procedures.
thinking about oneself over others in extreme need, stabs the humanity inside us. Its time when humanity needs to be embraced by all indeed and cummalatively fighting the odds.
In the US, we have the Good Samaritan law which protects people who
help others from any legal repercussions or harassment by the police.
Police are only required to take a written statement from the good
samaritan who helped the person in distress. A few years back I was
a witness at a serious car accident. Including me many others
stopped their car to help the seriously injured lady till ambulances
arrived. The police first thanked me for helping and then asked me
very politely whether I will be able to stay behind and give a
statement. I gave a statement and that was the last time they ever
called me. The statement was sufficient for all courts and they are
not required to call me again. We need laws like that inIndia. When
people know they will not be harassed, they will help.
Forty years back, my sister was staying in Delhi for her studies. At that time also, she used to say that going out in Delhi for a girl after 7.00 pm is dangerous and not advisable. After so many years, the situation in Delhi has not changed. In fact, it is the situation now, in the entire country.
Police attitude should change for the good
Yes, peoples attitude should change in helping the victims of accidents
and crime. For this to happen attitude of police and law should change
first. Now, the first person in suspect is the one who helps the
victim.Unless the law protects him from harassment by police and other
investigating agencies the present situation will continue.
Delhi passers by helping!-their car tapestry will be soiled.Add to it
why to get involved in some one else trouble. Then, who will like to deal
with police. As regards auto drivers, their daily show should be
sufficient to warn you against expecting any positive gesture/action
from this lot.Exceptions apart,my observation as an elder is that
educated young persons are more forthcoming in hours of need for
strangers.
It is indeed tragic that lives are lost because of the inordinate delay in getting the injured to hospitals. The public at large do not lend a helping hand especially in medico-legal cases as they are scared that they might run into trouble with the police. This attitude should change as tomorrow it might be our own kith and kin who are in trouble and it might not just be possible to look the other way then.
I too came across an accident of which victim is my fellow villager,
though i called 108 and it reached in acceptable time, i was not
allowed to accompany him because of my brother and cousin, and you
know what happened he died next day because of he taken to Govt
hospital and their poor treatment. Still i regret every day when ever
i came across any accident news or when i see his father. On that day
i may directed ambulance to some private hospital, may have saved his
life. Here people don't take social responsibility and for every cause
to this that Bandh, all garbage thing. how it will develop ?
It is not the people to blame. It is the problem with the law/police of troubling the people who help in such situations. There is news that the Singapore doctor who treated her will also be mentioned as a witness? Why should he be troubled? Who will pay for his time and travel costs? There should be a simple option for helpers to walk away from being a witness or harassed
The incident clearly manifests our attitude. Merely, lighting the candle after the incident is not the need of the hour rather we need to be proactive and benevolent. Had even one person extended help, this incident could have been avoided. However, this does not mean the solicit support at India gate is wrong. Still, the support should not look like a protest killing innocent constable.
The Civil society and the government should come up with pros and cons of each and every legislative as well as executive measures linked to such incident in addition to making the admission into the hospital easy, showing respect for the person who helps in the need of the hour rather than calling in Police Station again and again.
Let us stop giving political mileage to any party or show called organisation telling themselves as saviour with hardly an real accolades.
We have completely failed as a nation.Only a hope, that we awaken and
take responsibility...each one of us owes it to our future generations.
Oh GOD!!!!!!!If the police officers knew that, there were any reward for
quick action of that Victim girl, and not quarreling to each other for
taking any action...........then the girl would be saved.
Feeling very much sorrow about that.
