CPI(M) leader Brinda Karat has written to the National Commission for Women demanding an enquiry into the alleged “abuse” of four young women of the CPI(M)’s student and youth wings by the West Bengal police. She has also demanded prompt action against the guilty.

“We wish to bring to your notice an atrocious case of abuse, persecution and humiliation by the West Bengal Police of our young women from Students’ Federation of India and Democratic Youth Federation of India at Kolkata, West Bengal, on 10 March, 2017,” Ms. Karat said in her letter to NCW chairperson Lalitha Kumaramangalam.

“They were arrested, along with others, on March 9. They were participating in a protest march against the scam in appointments in primary schools. Many students were beaten up by the police and a few were hospitalised,” the letter, signed by other All-India Democratic Women's Association members, said.
