Robert Vadra, brother-in-law of Congress general secretary and Amethi MP Rahul Gandhi, joined his wife Priyanka Gandhi Vadra in Gauriganj (Amethi parliamentary constituency) on Monday to enlist support for the Congress. Mr. Vadra participated in a motorcycle rally and later addressed people in the Salon Assembly segment of the constituency.

Taking time off for an informal chat with journalists in Gauriganj, Mr. Vadra said he and his wife, Priyanka, could enter politics, if the people wanted them to.

On Ms. Vadra joining politics, he said there was a time for everything and right now it was Mr. Gandhi's time.

Mr. Vadra later told a public meeting that he, who had been coming to Amethi and Rae Bareli for the last 15 years, was here this time to spread the message of his brother-in-law.

While Ms. Vadra has been campaigning for Congress candidates in Amethi and Rae Bareli, represented by Mr. Gandhi and UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi, Mr. Vadra arrived in Amethi on Sunday night along with their daughter, Miraya.

Given the time being devoted by Ms. Vadra for campaigning, clearly the Gandhi family's prestige is at stake in the 10 Assembly constituencies of Amethi and Rae Bareli. On Monday, Ms. Vadra addressed about 20 meetings in Amethi to drum up support for the party candidates.

Congress sources said Mr. Gandhi was likely to address three election meetings in Sultanpur, Gauriganj and Rae Bareli on February 11. Elections there will be held in the third phase on February 15.
