Priyanka, Vadra to remain exempt from security checks

Home Ministry decision despite Priyanka’s letter on withdrawal of privileges

June 03, 2014 12:17 am | Updated November 16, 2021 06:48 pm IST - NEW DELHI:

Congress president Sonia Gandhi’s daughter, Priyanka Vadra, and her husband Robert Vadra will continue to get immunity from security checks at domestic airports, according to Union Home Ministry sources.

Ms Vadra had written to the Special Protection Group (SPG) on May 30 seeking withdrawal of the security check exemptions for her and her family while travelling. The letter was in response to Civil Aviation Minister Ashok Gajapathi Raju’s suggestions that the government could review security exemptions to Mr. Vadra at airports. Asked about Ms. Vadra’s letter to the SPG, Minister of State for Home Kiren Rijiju said: “Security does not depend on the whims and fancies of any individual.” The matter should rather be decided by security agencies, he said.
