Speaking out for the first time in defence of her husband Robert Vadra, who is facing allegations of illegal land deals, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, daughter of Congress president Sonia Gandhi, on Tuesday said the Opposition was trying to malign his image with “false charges.”
“My family is being humiliated. A lot of harsh things are being said about my husband. (But) The more they attack my family, the stronger we will emerge,” Ms. Vadra said in an emotional address during a road show in Rae Bareli, where she is campaigning for her mother.
Ms. Vadra said she was “pained” by the Opposition’s verbal onslaught against her husband, which, she claimed, was aimed at “diverting the attention of the people from development issues.”
Ms. Vadra said people were being misled by the Opposition towards “meaningless talk” at the cost of development and future of the youth. “I tell my children that the truth will prevail,” she said.
Reaching out to the people, she said her mother had been “accepted” by the country despite the fact that “she was not born in India.”
