DMK president M. Karunanidhi: “We expect a good President. Antony proposed (some names) and so did I
Special Arrangement DMK president M. Karunanidhi: “We expect a good President. Antony proposed (some names) and so did I".

Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) president M. Karunanidhi, whose party is a key United Progressive Alliance (UPA) constituent, on Monday said some names were discussed during his talks with Defence Minister A K Antony on the candidate for the Presidential election, but declined to divulge details.

“We expect a good President. Antony proposed (some names) and so did I. But we cannot tell you the details,” he told reporters here a day after the senior Congress leader met him here and held hour-long talks.

Mr. Karunanidhi initially declined to talk about Sunday’s deliberations and merely said he discussed with Mr. Antony the coming Presidential poll. “I cannot say what transpired.” However, when reporters persisted, he said they discussed some names.

Mr. Antony, whose visit was part of the consultation process among UPA allies on the Presidential election to arrive at a consensus leader to succeed incumbent Pratibha Patil, had described the meeting as ‘fruitful’. But he had also refused to share any details saying he would report to Congress president Sonia Gandhi whatever Mr. Karunanidhi told him.

Yes E. Sreedharan OR Infosys chairman Narayanamurty must be considered.

The designation of President is a government post, not a political
post. It is important only for the public to know the candidature and
political party has nothing to do in this. The system must be like
that of US. We are ready to copy and execute all the materialistic
accomplishment of the developed country and we never want to adapt the
good practices followed there for our welfare. President and the
governor are the real head according to the constitution. PM and CM
are the advisory position and the ministry is optional according to
the constitution. All that is essential is the President, Governor and
the secretaries. This is itself a proof that out system is not
functioning to the constitution. We the public elect the PM and CM who
have no real powers according to the constitution and leave the
election of President and Governor to the political party who have no
place in the governance. This is why we have democracy in papers and
anarchy in practice.

History:

Sometime in 1981, Mr.M.Karunanithi went to see Then PM Mrs. Indira Gandhi. Mrs Gandhi asked for Mr.Karunanithi for
his opinion on Mr. R.Venkataraman as President. Mr Karnanithi immediately quipped it won't look good if both PM and
President are from Forward Caste and suggested Mr. Zail Singh. The PM immediately called Mr Dawan who was secretary
and asked to find out the caste of Mr. Singh. The secretary came back and informed that Mr.Singh belonged to
GoldSmith community. rest is history. This incident went around PM's inner circle and her Cabinet. Mr. RV did have bit of grudge since then though eventually he became President later.
Mr. kalam time has come and gone. It is foolish to assume no other person is capable of being a neutral president in a country of a billion people. One example from Tamil Nadu is Mr. Kumari Ananthan. Mr. kamaraj deputy and a Honest man above politics. If only he had played politics he would have been a governor of some state.

What can we expect, if the people involved in choosing our President
are corrupt and have been looting the public for decades.

According to karunanidhi Abdul Kalam is not a good president. Any X can be a good president if Cong. Govt withdraws cases against Kanimozhi.

As the race for Presidential candidate selection begins all the political parties are busy in choosing a Best performing Rubber Stamp to suit their whimsical desire. The so called post only invites luxurious expenditure to the tax payers money. It never stopped corruption in higher echelons. Being the Supreme commander of the nation, this post cannot weed out corruption in Army itself. This post can only be a silent spectator to the various scams like 2G scam, 4G, Adarsh and CWG scams. While the paraties are busy in arriving at consensus the conscientious true Indian asks a question do we need such a post?

Why cant Mr MK support Mr Abdul Kalam as a choice for the president?
Why he is having this grudge against him?

I am amused. Merely being a CM for long or a key partner in Centre, does not make Mr. Karunanidhi a politician of good credentials, as it does not make Sonia/MMS or BJP wallahs. The days when values mattered in viewing things for national good appaear to have gone once and for all, largely from the days of Indira G when "committed" judiciary etc were started. From the appointments like that of M/s Pratibha Patil, NHRC Charman, various Governors, MPs like M. Azharuddin, Raj Babbar etc, made with the support of people like Mr. Karunanidhi, there is little hope that merit will prevail.. caste, loyalty, religion, sex will be the criteria. There is little hope of people like Mr. Kalam (re)surfacing again.

It is very unfortunate that, what was supposed to be publically discussed is clandestine now. What I don't understand is what is problem in discussing this publically. citizens should be well aware of proceedings and improvements in this regard. It is very sad that we don't have that luxury just because some politicians whats to play their cards.

It will be interesting to know the names proposed by the former Chief
Minister of Tamilnadu; People have no faith in the offices of
President, Vice President or Governors. His suggestions carefully
carried out by Congress under the so called coalition dharma will be the
last nail.
