Stressing the need for more investment and improvement in the quality of education in the country, President Pranab Mukherjee on Saturday said returns on such investments would be extremely productive for the country.
He was speaking at the function organised to mark the Diamond Jubilee of K.C. College here. Maharashtra Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan, actor Amitabh Bachchan and Reliance Group chairman Anil Ambani were among those present at the function.
Calling for more private investment in the education sector, Mr. Mukherjee said that the best universities cannot be created by government funds. “If we want to be a first class nation, we need to have first class universities and colleges.”
“As per the international rating agencies, not a single Indian university is worth being included in top 200 global [list],” he added. In its days, Takshshila used to attract students, researchers and scholars from across the world, the President said. “It is really unfortunate that after C.V. Raman, the talent of all Nobel laureates of Indian origin was recognised while they were working outside India.”
