President Pranab Mukherjee cut short his trip to his village Mirati in West Bengal’s Birbhum district in view of the cyclone threat to the east coast late Saturday evening. “The President visited the house of his sister Annapurna Devi at Kirnahar village during the day. His convoy left for the Panagarh airbase in Bardhaman district and he flew to New Delhi in the evening,” Moloy Ghatak, West Bengal Minister, who was deputed to accompany Mr. Mukherjee, told The Hindu over telephone. Mr. Mukherjee, who had arrived in the State on Thursday to participate in Durga Puja celebrations in his ancestral home, inaugurated a museum of his mementos and memorabilia at Kirnahar Shibchandra High School, where he studied from 1946 to 1952.

On Friday, he participated in an event — “Asia’s First Nobel— a few song offerings from Gitanjali,” organised by Visva-Bharati University.
