China sees India as a strategic partner and will do nothing to harm New Delhi’s interests, Premier Li Keqiang said, while calling on President Pranab Mukherjee at Rashtrapati Bhavan on Tuesday. Mr. Mukherjee expressed happiness that Mr. Li chose India as his first destination of overseas travel after assuming office. “The President expressed happiness over the fact that India was the first country Premier Li was visiting after assuming office. He said it reflected the importance attached to India-China relations by the Premier,” said Venu Rajamony, Press Secretary to the President.

Mr. Mukherjee said India’s vision for relations with China was of a “truly good neighbourly relationship” that was based on a “high degree of trust and understanding with a strong intersection of common interests.” Both countries should be sensitive to each other’s concerns, and there was need to build trust and expand shared interests.

India-China relationship was one of the most important in the 21st century, and transborder rivers should unite rather than dividing people of both nations, he said.
