Union Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee on Wednesday promised more measures to check the rise in the prices of essential commodities.

Talking to reporters here on the sidelines of a meeting on rural development, he admitted that the high inflation was a matter of concern. The government had initiated certain steps and was constantly monitoring the situation.

In the light of deliberations of the Cabinet Committee on Prices, the Cabinet Secretary held a review meeting, which decided on further steps to reverse the rising prices and tame inflation, he said.

Mr. Mukherjee pointed to the areas where imports were liberalised to cope with the shortage of essential items.

Earlier, inaugurating a two-day conference of project directors of the District Rural Development Agency, organised by the Ministry of Rural Development, Mr. Mukherjee said the Centre’s priority was the successful implementation of its flagship programmes meant to improve the quality and reach of public services in rural areas to achieve higher growth.
