Prakash Javadekar is one of the BJP’s national spokespersons and a Rajya Sabha member from Maharashtra. He hails from Pune in western Maharashtra and was a part of the ABVP as a student and was also later part of the Bhartiya Janata Yuva Morcha.

Mr. Javadekar is considered close to former party president Nitin Gadkari, a member of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s core group.

A former banker, Mr Javadekar, 63, was a member of the Maharashtra Legislative Council for two terms from 1990 to 2002 before being elected to Rajya Sabha in 2008. Hailing from Pune, Mr. Javadekar, a commerce graduate, is also the party’s in-charge of Andhra Pradesh.

He was instrumental in striking a deal with Chandrababu Naidu’s TDP. Playing a key role in unearthing the cash for vote scam, he was among those whose complaint to the Central Vigilance Commission led to a CBI inquiry into coal scam.
