Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) chief Sharad Pawar on Friday said the poll results showed that the UPA and its allies enjoyed people's support. However, he did not comment on the outcome in Tamil Nadu.

“The election results show that there is support for the UPA and its allies,” he said.

Hailing the victory of Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee, he said, “Her efforts have paid off.”

Commenting on the Congress' winning performance in Assam, he said: “There were doubts over the Congress' prospects in Assam, but the party's landslide has proved otherwise.”Meanwhile, Shiv Sena chief Bal Thackeray said the poll results in Tamil Nadu and West Bengal were a good sign for “the alliance of the Sena, BJP and Republican Party of India. The next Vidhan Sabha elections in Maharashtra will prove to be [the battle of] Panipat for the Congress-NCP,” he said.
