As Prime Minister Manmohan Singh rises to address the nation from the ramparts of Red Fort for the tenth time – a record that only Jawaharlal Nehru and Indira Gandhi have surpassed – he will talk of his vision for the next decade, government sources told The Hindu .
Dr. Singh will not just talk of the positive changes in India since Independence, but will also focus on the strides that the country has made in the last ten years in which the United Progressive Alliance has been in power.
While listing the government’s achievements, these sources said he will highlight the benefits of food security and the direct benefits transfer scheme that has been launched in a few areas. On Pakistan and the recent killing of jawans along the Line of Control, the Prime Minister will say that while peace is needed on the border, anti-India activities will not be tolerated and for the UPA government, national security will be of paramount concern.
He is also likely to make an appeal for the urgent and continuing need to keep communal forces at bay, these sources added.
