Campaigning for the February 18 Assembly elections in Tripura is expected to reach its peak with Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressing two meetings in the State on Thursday.

Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal arrived on Wednesday for the BJP campaign. His predecessor, Tarun Gogoi, arrived for the Congress campaign.

Mr. Modi will address his first meeting at Sonamura in Sepahijala district. Earlier, he was scheduled to speak at Santirbasar in South Tripura district, but the venue was shifted to Sonamura. The second rally in Kailashahar in Unakoti district.

“Modi ji will again visit on February 15 to address a meeting in Agartala, apart from other engagements. However, programmes are yet to be finalised,” said Himanta Biswa Sarma, the BJP’s election in-charge and Assam Finance Minister.

Star campaigners of various parties have arrived. For the CPI(M), leaders have arrived from West Bengal.

Gogoi’s charge

At a press conference here, Mr. Gogoi charged the BJP with making false promises to the voters.

He lashed out at Mr. Sarma, his erstwhile ministerial colleague, saying he was involved in corruption and the CBI should hold an investigation. “The BJP used to charge me for protecting him, but now he is everything for that party,” he said.
