Andaman boat tragedy: PM announces compensation

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has announced a compensation of Rs. 2 lakh to the next of kin of each of those killed in Sunday’s boat tragedy in the Andaman Sea near Port Blair.

Expressing his sorrow at the loss of lives, mostly tourists, the Prime Minister sanctioned the ex gratia from the National Relief Fund.

The official death toll is put at 21, with one person still missing.

The overcrowded private boat was carrying 43 passengers.
