The Supreme Court on Tuesday refused to direct the Maharashtra government to stop supplying water to breweries and distilleries in drought-hit regions of the State.
A vacation Bench of Justices P.C. Pant and D.Y. Chandrachud observed that the plea was uncalled for as the Bombay High Court had already directed the State to reduce water supply to the liquor industry by 60 per cent from May 10. The High Court order would be in operation till June 27. Dismissing the petition, the Bench said these were anyway government policy decisions and a line on judicial intervention had to be drawn somewhere.
When the petitioner, Sanjay Bhaskarrao, said entire regions were suffering from drought-like conditions, the Bench said it did not want to take over the governance of the State.
