Alleging that she had received phone calls threatening her with dire consequences if she stepped out of her home, athlete Pinki Pramanik, whose gender has been questioned following allegations of rape levelled against her, sought police protection on Sunday.

Ms. Pramanik has also filed a complaint against the woman who levelled the rape charges against her.

“I have been out of my house for almost a month and when I returned I found many of my belongings and important documents missing. So I have lodged a police complaint. I have also sought police protection,” Ms. Pramanik told journalists after filing the complaint.

Ms. Pramanik was arrested on June 14 and spent nearly a month in prison before she was released last week on bail by a district court in West Bengal’s North 24 Parganas. On Sunday, she said that when she returned to her house she found several things missing, but could not report the matter to the police earlier as she was unwell. Ms. Pramanik said only the woman who filed charges against her could have committed the theft, because the keys to the flat were with her throughout the period she spent in prison. Ms. Pramanik said she was being “humiliated” by a section of the media, which was still referring to her as a criminal, even though she had been granted bail.
