Vital phone links to the military and intelligence wings along Raisina Hill have been snapped after thieves posing as civic workers stole a 190-metre-long copper cable from near Sena Bhavan in the high-security area of Lutyens’ Delhi.

The police suspect that the incident took place on Wednesday evening when some persons dressed as civic workers carried out the theft. “We have received a complaint. A case is being registered under relevant provisions of law. It appears that the thieves were in a vehicle, in which they decamped with the stolen cable,” said a senior police officer.

Circumstantial evidence suggested that the thieves entered the sewer pipeline through a manhole, snapped the copper cable laid along the pipeline from one manhole to another and then vanished from the scene.

Confirming the incident, MTNL General Manager (Central) Satish Tandon said only lines to the Sena Bhavan building were affected.

However, official sources said many phone links to the military and intelligence wings on Raisina Hill were also disconnected.

“A similar incident was reported in New Delhi a few years ago. Those involved in the theft were adept at their work,” said another police officer.
