The mortal remains of martyred Subedar K.P. Singh were consigned to the flames with full military and state honours at his native village Bhondsi here on Monday. Hundreds of people from Bhondsi and nearby villages took part in the last journey.
Died on ThursdayThe 46-year-old armyman achieved martyrdom on December 19 while fighting with terrorists in Sudan as part of the United Nations peacekeeping force deployed there.
Chief Parliamentary Secretary and Sohna MLA Dharamvir, Badshahpur MLA Rao Dharampal, Gurgaon MP Rao Inderjeet Singh, Gurgaon Additional Deputy Commissioner P.S. Chauhan and many others paid their last respects to Subedar Singh.
Mr Singh is survived by wife Asnee Lata, daughter Anjali and son Kunal. Anjali is a student of B.Sc final while Kunal studies in Class XI at the Army Public School in Meerut. Mr. Dharamvir announced an ex-gratia sum of Rs.10 lakh to the family on behalf of the Haryana government and Rs.5 lakh to construct a memorial in his memory.
Major Rajnish Tyagi, Major Dinesh Punia and Lieutenant K.V. Raman, who accompanied Subedar Singh’s body to his native village, said Singh was appointed in 8 Raj Rifles Medical Corps and was deputed in Akobo in South Sudan as part of the U.N. peacekeeping mission. They said that on December 19, Subedar Singh and Subedar Dharmesh Sangwan of Charkhi Dadri of Haryana were killed in an attack by tribals.
‘Supreme sacrifice’The martyr’s father Kanhaya Singh and mother Moorti Devi said that they were proud of the supreme sacrifice made by their son. Singh’s younger brother Ajay Singh was also part of the U.N. peacekeeping force in South Sudan and had returned to India a few weeks ago.
