Day-long commemorative sitting recalls immense sacrifices made by freedom fighters
Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha reiterated their supremacy on Sunday and resolved to uphold and maintain their dignity and sanctity to make Parliament an effective instrument of change and strengthen democratic values and principles.
The resolution of the House of the People and the House of the Elders comes even as a debate is going on outside Parliament about its present day functioning and the role of the civil societies in taking up some people's issues that the MPs had failed to take up.
Members of both the Houses, after a historic day-long sitting to commemorate the 60 anniversary of the first sitting of Parliament (May 13, 1952), passed a unanimous resolution by voice vote to enhance the accountability of the government to the people through Parliament's oversight and rededicate themselves to the sacred task of nation-building.
The resolution was moved by Lok Sabha Speaker Meira Kumar and Rajya Sabha Chairman Hamid Ansari in the respective Houses and the members approved it amid thumping of desks.
“We, the members... do hereby solemnly reaffirm our total and abiding commitment to the ideals cherished by our founding fathers, and resolve: to uphold and maintain the dignity, sanctity and supremacy of Parliament; to make Parliament an effective instrument of change and to strengthen democratic values and principles.
“To enhance the accountability of the government towards the people through the oversight of Parliament, and; to rededicate ourselves completely to the sacred task of nation-building.”
The MPs recalled the immense sacrifices made by freedom fighters in the nation's struggle for Independence and the stellar role played by the founding fathers of the Constitution in mandating equality, fraternity, justice, brotherhood of mankind and the uplift of the under-privileged and down-trodden sections of the society.
They acknowledged with satisfaction and pride the maturity of the people who have cherished the democratic values and worked ceaselessly for the unity and integrity of the nation.
In the last 60 years, Parliament had, through epoch-making laws, taken decisive steps towards ensuring equity and justice in all matters for establishing an inclusive society in pursuance of the deep faith and commitment to ideals enshrined in the Constitution, the resolution said.

Why doesnt the media raise the same questions that Ralph Paul has raised here ? Arent these very pertinent questions ? How can criminals sitting inside parliament resolve to uphold dignity of parliament ?Are we Indians a pack of gullible and dumb individuals , that our parliamentarians can say and do whatever they like ??
What a joke this is on the people of this nation !!. 162 individuals (29.83 %)with criminal charges and 76 (14.00 %)individuals with serious criminal charges ( courtesy ADR website)are sitting inside this ‘temple of democracy’ , and passing resolution to uphold and maintain the dignity and sanctity of Parliament and make it an effective instrument of change and strengthen democratic values and principles.?! True mockery of democracy and parliament . Instead on this 60th anniversary , ALL the political parties and current MPs who are today talking about 'dignity of parliament', 'supremacy of parliamnet', sanctity of parliament ; sovereignty of parliament etc, must FIRST declare their intentions in writing to clean up the parliament membership and truthfully uphold the dignity of the Indian parliament . Or otherwise all such claims about upholding dignity of the parliament with criminals sitting inside parliament is a big farce and a cruel joke on this nation.
People have lost trust in their ministers, Mere pledge taking woould not fool anybody, I hope there are some firm actions to follow
Present day politicians have no authority to talk about the freedom fighters. Present day politicians are looters of the nation and highly selfish. They always think about themselves and their families. Taking oath is a customary for them. They never live up to the oath they taken before assuming any power. It is we, the people of India, are the fools still believing these politicians. Just think about the status of those members to the present day status of our beloved members. In the name of serving the nation, they amazed illegal wealth and spoiled the nation but still without any guilty they are again taking resolves. beware of these politicians and support any move to punish these politicians. this is our duty.
I have been nurtured from childhood by my father in the rule of law & the well being of all. There is no doubt that India has survived as a democratic nation at a time when many countries after their independence have failed to live up to expectation.Watching the way our parliament is functioning nowadays, serious doubt on the day of sixtieth birthday, our parliament members should seriously ponder ,the price the people pay, before this country also falls by wayside
This is a welcome resolve on the occasion of 60th anniversary of the Indian Parliament.Let us all hope that the members of parliament will uphold the aspirations of founding fathers of the Constitution and by their sheer conduct restore the dignity of the parliament which has been eroded in recent years, and in a decade. The foremost is to resolve that parliament proceedings ,under no compulsions, will be paralysed. There are other ways to draw atention of the treasury benches towards nation's urgent and immediate concerns.Still most urgent need to restore dignity and deserved respect to this august body is to root out the criminals, and corrupt elements from it.And the third necessity is to enhance the intellectual quality and rigour while debating issues in the parliament. Those among us who are old enough and have had the privilege of witnessing parliamentary deliberations during the reign of Nehru, find current debates a poor apology to parliamentary proceedings.
TRUE, 60 yrs travel of indian democracy made it economically strong(may be!) but definitely socially/welfare-wise endangered. just strengthening backward social stratii is not enough. Equality must be the motto. Mind-setters and changers (politicians at all every levels) forgot their bounden duty to the people, thats the real problem laughing on our face (think globally), this must change. Divide and rule policy/tricks be buried deeper-deepest inside earth. Politicians should learn to behave as leaders and not street-fighters. Many things they have to learn from now on. be ready for it, else people will tell u how to behave inside-outside parliament. Make it a proud institution and not a laughing stock.
