Parliament today paid homage to thousands of people killed in the devastating earthquake and Tsunami in Japan, observing that it was a “tragedy of incalculable magnitude”.

Members in both the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha observed silence as a mark of respect to those killed in the catastrophe which struck the northern pacific coast of Japan on March 11.

In her message in the Lok Sabha, Speaker Meira Kumar said the House expresses “its heartfelt condolences to the people of Japan for the tragic loss of life and large scale damage to property by this catastrophe.”

In the Rajya Sabha, Chairman Hamid Ansari read out a message expressing heartfelt sympathy and deepest condolences to the “friendly people” of Japan, who have lost their near and dear ones in the tragedy.

“It is indeed a tragedy of incalculable magnitude...I am sure the House will join me....to pray for early recovery of those who have been injured,” Mr. Ansari said.
