The Jammu and Kashmir Police have been informed by the Border Security Force [BSF] that a Pakistani, identified as Akhtar Hussain, had been "captured alive in injured condition" near Paharpur post on the International Border in Hiranagar area of Jammu where militants had carried out twin fidayeen attacks last week. Four Armymen, four Police personnel, two civilians besides three suspected Pakistani cadres of Lashkar-e-Taiba had died in the suicide attacks at Hiranagar and Samba on September 26.
Even as the BSF, according to the sources, believed that the 30-year-old was "either a militant or a guide", Akhtar has described himself as a civilian and resident of Nikowal village of Pakistan. He has denied any links to militants or the cross-border narcotic smugglers. Having fallen in BSF's custody after getting injured in a late night shootout on Thursday, Akhtar has been rushed to the winter capital and admitted to a military hospital near the airport at Satwari in Jammu. The BSF officials have reported that the youth was found injured at a deserted spot when searches were carried out close to the International Border on Friday afternoon.
The police, security and intelligence organisations are said to be working out whether the captured youth was part of the militant group whose attempt of infiltration was claimed to have been foiled by the BSF with a precise armed response or he was a civilian. Officials were tight-lipped about the recoveries if any at the site of the shootout.
